Defibrillator FAQ’s
What is a Defibrillator?
Defibrillation refers to a form of treatment commonly given to patients with life-threatening conditions such as ventricular fibrillation, cardiac arrhythmias, and pulseless ventricular tachycardia.
The mechanism of defibrillation involves the delivery of therapeutic doses of electrical energy into the affected heart with the help of a device called the Defibrillator. A Defibrillator can depolarize the affected mass of the cardiac muscles and terminate the arrhythmias. It can also, restore a normal sinus rhythm by reactivating the functions of the SA node (sinoatrial node), which is the natural pacemaker of the heart.
Defibrillators are of different types including transvenous, external, and implanted. Sometimes, external units called the AEDs (automated external defibrillators) may be used to automate the diagnosis of abnormal cardiac rhythms. AEDs are designed such that even lay responders such as bystanders can use them successfully without any prior training to help rescue patients suffering from medical emergencies.
How much do Defibrillators Cost?
Medical defibrillators vary hugely in terms of how they cost. Ranging from a couple of thousand dollars for refurbished older models to tens of thousands for newer models with higher specifications.
